I’ve taken this exam too.

I’m a working RCT, and I built RadCon.Tech to help other technicians study for the DOE Core exam. Whether you’re taking it for the first time or preparing to requalify, I want it to be easier to fit studying into your day.

The idea is straightforward: read the handbook, practice what you’ve learned, and spend more time on the topics you need to review. The site brings the digital textbook, study questions and practice tests together.

The handbook is free to read, with notes explaining corrections to the printed edition. Review is ongoing. Calculators and reference tables are there to help when you need them.

Where the answers come from

You should be able to check what you’re learning. Worked solutions include handbook references so you can read the relevant passage and understand the method. These are the main sources for the exam topics.

DOE-HDBK-1122
The RCT training handbook. Module and page references connect worked solutions to the material you are studying.
DOE-STD-1098
The DOE Radiological Control standard, including posting, limits and radiological controls.
10 CFR 835
Occupational Radiation Protection requirements, including dose limits and monitoring.

Reference data and licensing

The charts and calculators use the following sources. Their data is separate from the handbook references used in practice questions.

Chart of the Nuclides
Half-lives, decay modes and branching data come from NUBASE2020, licensed CC BY 3.0. The symbol marks values that follow the handbook instead of NUBASE2020. These differences are identified as required by the licence.
Periodic table
Atomic weights and abundances from published evaluated data; values used in questions cite the handbook.
Conversion & formula sheets
Based on the reference sheets in the DOE handbook. Check which references your testing site permits.
Calculator decay data
Gamma energies and yields come from ENSDF, maintained by the evaluator network coordinated by NNDC at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The data is retrieved through IAEA Nuclear Data Services and credited in the calculators.
